Candidates: Shana Davis and Brooke Christensen
Question 1: Do you support building the proposed 8-mile long gondola in LCC (e.g., yes, no, depends)? Why or why not?
- Shana Davis: “No I do not support it. It only benefits the resorts and people using it to get to the resort. It should not be funded by taxpayers. I’d also like to protect that beautiful canyon and the wildlife.”
- Brooke Christensen: “No, I do not support a gondola in LCC. 1) I do not want to spend taxpayer money on it. 2) I am concerned that the gondola solution will not fix the traffic issue. Traffic is bad up the canyon a very small number of days a year – that doesn’t seem like enough of a problem to justify the expense. 3) I am concerned about the effect on the water shed. 4) I don’t want the view marred by huge posts up the canyon. I would prefer a solution that requires the ski resorts to build parking garages to maximize the space and if that isn’t feasible, buses would be my next preference. 5) I do think the idea of a gondola is cool and it would be a tourism attraction. With that said, those businesses profiting from this attraction (ski resorts, proposed hotels at the base, etc.) should be the ones to pay for it. If the business model isn’t sustainable for those companies, it shouldn’t be pursued.”
Question 2: Utah taxpayers, via sales taxes across the state, are paying into a fund that would fund UDOT’s gondola in LCC. At an estimated funding cost of $1.4 Bn this amounts to roughly $1200 per household. Do you think the gondola should be fully or partially paid
- Shana Davis: “Not at all. It should be funded by the resorts who are benefiting. It does not seen right for residents in southern Irish to be paying taxes for a gondola in Little Cottonwood Canyon.”
- Brooke Christensen: “I do not believe that the gondola project should be funded by taxpayer money.“
Question 3: Sandy City Council has consistently attempted to be good stewards with City taxes. Sandy residents overwhelmingly oppose the gondola and use of their tax money to fund it. If elected, will you represent your constituents’ preferences for better bus service?
- Shana Davis: “Other/Maybe/Unsure”
- Brooke Christensen: “Yes”
Question 4: If elected, will you actively oppose State or County-imposed infrastructure projects that increase the tax burden on Sandy City residents and will you support City Council resolution that defend residents from such overreach?
- Shana Davis: “Other/Maybe/Unsure”
- Brooke Christensen: “Yes”
Question 5: If you would like to add your own comments, questions or feedback for clarification or conciseness please do so.
- Shana Davis: “On these last 2 questions, I don’t have enough information to adequately answer the questions.”
- Brooke Christensen: No response provided
