Candidates: Brooke D’Souza and Evan Tobin
Question 1: Do you support building the proposed 8-mile long gondola in LCC (e.g., yes, no, depends)? Why or why not?
- Brooke D’Sousa: “Sandy experiences real winter traffic and safety problems that demand real solutions. I support solutions that will actually reduce canyon congestion while respecting our canyon and the voices of Sandy residents. I have always supported the approved phased approach with enhanced busing and believe it should be fully implemented and evaluated before considering any future phasing.”
- Evan Tobin: “NO! The gondola is absolutely the worst option! Adequate bussing should be our first priority, with Electric AWD busses would be best.”
Question 2: Utah taxpayers, via sales taxes across the state, are paying into a fund that would fund UDOT’s gondola in LCC. At an estimated funding cost of $1.4 Bn this amounts to roughly $1200 per household. Do you think the gondola should be fully or partially paid for with taxpayer funds, or not at all? Why do you feel this way?
- Brooke D’Sousa: “I do not support burdening taxpayers with solutions that don’t solve the problem.“
- Evan Tobin: “The gondola would only benefit 2 businesses, Snowbird & Alta. If they want it, they should pay for it!“
Question 3: Sandy City Council has consistently attempted to be good stewards with City taxes. Sandy residents overwhelmingly oppose the gondola and use of their tax money to fund it. If elected, will you represent your constituents’ preferences for better bus service?
- Brooke D’Sousa: No response provided
- Evan Tobin: “Yes”
Question 4: If elected, will you actively oppose State or County-imposed infrastructure projects that increase the tax burden on Sandy City residents and will you support City Council resolution that defend residents from such overreach?
- Brooke D’Sousa: No response provided
- Evan Tobin: “Yes”
Question 5: If you would like to add your own comments, questions or feedback for clarification or conciseness please do so.
- Brooke D’Sousa: “I will always advocate for the best solutions for our community, and I will defend Sandy residents from projects that impose unnecessary costs without proven benefit.”
- Evan Tobin: “I support better bussing in little cottonwood canyon. It is a disgrace that UDOT recommended more frequent bussing and UTA responded by cutting service. I would like to see the ski busses for both LCC & BCC run much frequently, throughout the entire ski season & later in the day as well. I think ski busses, while already free to ski passholders and others, should be free to all. There is a free fare zone downtown, the cottonwood canyons should be a free fare zone as well!”
